چکیده

We have read with interest the American Thoracic Society/ European Respiratory Society Task Force document on exhaled breath condensate (EBC) [1]. EBC pH is emerging as a potential biomarker in respiratory disease. Gas standardisation (or deaeration) of EBC with argon is commonly performed to remove carbon dioxide prior to pH measurement [2–4]. It has been argued that CO2 is unwelcome ‘‘noise’’ in the sample and, although the completeness of CO2 removal has not been confirmed, gas-standardised EBC pH is stable and provides reproducible measurements [3, 4]. However, some authors regard CO2 as a relevant component of EBC and have measured pH without gas standardisation [5, 6]. These variations in methodology make comparison between studies difficult.

A physiological-social score for triaging of pandemic influenza patients.

In summary, argon deaeration decreases the concentration and the variability of exhaled breath condensate partial pressure of CO2, but there is always some remaining CO2 that may still be a confounding factor in pH assessment. CO2 content has a marked influence on exhaled breath condensate pH and, since exhaled breath condensate partial pressure of CO2 varies even after deaeration, it leaves so...

Exhaled breath condensate pH standardised for CO2 partial pressure.

Exhaled breath condensate (EBC) pH is considered to reflect the acid-base balance of the airways. Current pH measurements do not take into account the effect of CO2. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of condensate CO2 partial pressure on pH and to provide a more precise mode of EBC pH determination. Condensate pH and CO2 partial pressure were measured in parallel from 12 ...

Identification of acid reflux cough using serial assays of exhaled breath condensate pH

BACKGROUND Chronic cough is a common problem, frequently caused or exacerbated by acid reflux. Diagnosis of acid reflux cough is haphazard currently, often relying on long therapeutic trials of expensive medications. We tested the hypothesis that the most relevant mechanistic component of acid reflux in chronic cough is when it rises to the level of the airway where acid can potentially be aspi...

سنجش نشانگر زیستی IL-6در هوای بازدمی با استفاده از دستگاه جمع‌آورنده میعانات بازدمی

Background and Objective: The collection of exhaled breath condensate (EBC) is a noninvasive, safe and simple technique to obtain direct samples from lung and use for estimation of the effects of air pollution on human subjects. EBC contains several compounds including simple ions, hydrogen peroxide, proteins, cytokines, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), creatine, Electrolytes, trace elements and to...
